International Flavors & Fragrances (NYSE:IFF) Is Paying Out A Dividend Of $0.40
The board of International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (NYSE:IFF) has announced that it will pay a dividend of $0.40 per share on the 11th of July. Based on this payment, the dividend yield will be 2.2%, which is fairly typical for the industry.
International Flavors & Fragrances' Long-term Dividend Outlook appears Promising
We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Even though International Flavors & Fragrances isn't generating a profit, it is generating healthy free cash flows that easily cover the dividend. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
According to analysts, EPS should be several times higher next year. If the dividend extends its recent trend, estimates say the dividend could reach 26%, which we would be comfortable to see continuing.

Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $1.56, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.60. Dividend payments have grown at less than 1% a year over this period. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Over the past five years, it looks as though International Flavors & Fragrances' EPS has declined at around 53% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about International Flavors & Fragrances' payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
