CRH (CRH) Stock Slides As Margin Strength Meets Deal Risk

CRH stock slipped about 1% after earnings, capping a run where the shares have already fallen roughly 10% over the past month and almost 18% over three months. That reaction sits awkwardly with a quarter built around one clear message. Profitability in this heavy materials group is holding up, not cracking.

The headline this time is margin strength. In Q2 2026, CRH generated US$10.8b of revenue and more than US$2.6b of adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, with adjusted earnings per share of US$2.23. Management kept full year guidance intact and highlighted further margin expansion, which puts the focus squarely on how long that earnings quality can last.

Impressed by CRH's margin resilience but uneasy about the share price slide and how long that strength holds up? Compare it with companies that pair solid profitability with sturdier share trends in our 81 resilient stocks with low risk scores.

CRH bull case leans on margins and mix shift

Bulls argue that CRH can keep lifting profitability through pricing power, infrastructure exposure and a higher quality portfolio. Q2 backs a good part of that story. Revenue rose 6% while adjusted EBITDA moved slightly faster at 7%, and EPS grew 14%. That combination points to margin progress rather than just volume. Americas Materials Solutions and Road Solutions both posted mid single digit to low double digit growth in revenue and adjusted EBITDA, with margin gains helped by 5% aggregates pricing and cost discipline. International Solutions also added 70bps of margin with 8% adjusted EBITDA growth on 5% revenue growth. Management reaffirmed full year margin focused guidance and still expects about US$200m in net incremental EBITDA from acquisitions and disposals. Axius Water and the broader portfolio pruning look aligned with the shift toward infrastructure and water projects that tend to support steadier margins.

CRH bear case tests on integration, cyclicals, sentiment

The bear story stresses deal risk, reliance on public spending and exposure to weaker housing along with a sliding share price. Q2 does not settle those concerns. The US$8.5b Arcosa deal and roughly US$1.4b of acquisitions year to date increase execution and integration risk, especially with buybacks paused while investors wait for proof that the targeted US$175m of synergies is realistic. Americas Building Solutions saw revenue fall 2% and adjusted EBITDA fall 8%, with haulage costs and soft new build residential weighing on results. That shows operating leverage can cut both ways. Cement pricing guidance is only broadly flat, which limits an inflation offset in that product. Finally, the stock has fallen about 10% over 30 days and about 18% over 90 days, so the market is clearly questioning how durable the current earnings strength will be.
