Arch Resources (NYSE:ARCH) Has A Pretty Healthy Balance Sheet
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. Importantly, Arch Resources, Inc. (NYSE:ARCH) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Arch Resources Carry?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Arch Resources had US$143.3m in debt in March 2024; about the same as the year before. But it also has US$319.8m in cash to offset that, meaning it has US$176.5m net cash.
How Strong Is Arch Resources' Balance Sheet?
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Arch Resources had liabilities of US$326.8m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$640.4m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$319.8m in cash and US$234.6m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$412.9m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Of course, Arch Resources has a market capitalization of US$2.92b, so these liabilities are probably manageable. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, Arch Resources boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!
The modesty of its debt load may become crucial for Arch Resources if management cannot prevent a repeat of the 64% cut to EBIT over the last year. When a company sees its earnings tank, it can sometimes find its relationships with its lenders turn sour. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Arch Resources's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. While Arch Resources has net cash on its balance sheet, it's still worth taking a look at its ability to convert earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, to help us understand how quickly it is building (or eroding) that cash balance. During the last three years, Arch Resources produced sturdy free cash flow equating to 78% of its EBIT, about what we'd expect. This cold hard cash means it can reduce its debt when it wants to.
Summing Up
Although Arch Resources's balance sheet isn't particularly strong, due to the total liabilities, it is clearly positive to see that it has net cash of US$176.5m. And it impressed us with free cash flow of US$445m, being 78% of its EBIT. So we don't have any problem with Arch Resources's use of debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
