Even With A 27% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Ramaco Resources, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:METC) Performance Completely
Ramaco Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:METC) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 25% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Ramaco Resources' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.1x is worth a mention when the median P/E in the United States is similar at about 19x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Ramaco Resources' earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/E from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Ramaco Resources' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 45%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 74% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 173% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 15%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we find it interesting that Ramaco Resources is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Key Takeaway
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Ramaco Resources' P/E is also back up to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Ramaco Resources' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Ramaco Resources you should be aware of.
