Here's Why I Think White Mountains Insurance Group (NYSE:WTM) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like White Mountains Insurance Group (NYSE:WTM). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is White Mountains Insurance Group Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, White Mountains Insurance Group has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, White Mountains Insurance Group's EPS shot from US$129 to US$228, over the last year. You don't see 77% year-on-year growth like that, very often. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of White Mountains Insurance Group's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. White Mountains Insurance Group shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 48% to 57%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are White Mountains Insurance Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own White Mountains Insurance Group shares worth a considerable sum. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at US$86m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.

Does White Mountains Insurance Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

White Mountains Insurance Group's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering White Mountains Insurance Group for a spot on your watchlist. Even so, be aware that White Mountains Insurance Group is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...

Although White Mountains Insurance Group certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
