Should You Be Adding Mannatech (NASDAQ:MTEX) To Your Watchlist Today?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Mannatech (NASDAQ:MTEX). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Mannatech's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Mannatech has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. It's good to see that Mannatech's EPS have grown from US$2.25 to US$2.63 over twelve months. That's a 17% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things. It also seems the company is in good financial health, since it has boosted EPS by buying back shares.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. While Mannatech may have maintained EBIT margins over the last year, revenue has fallen. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Mannatech isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of US$41m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Mannatech Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Mannatech insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Actually, with 50% of the company to their names, insiders are profoundly invested in the business. I'm always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. With that sort of holding, insiders have about US$21m riding on the stock, at current prices. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Does Mannatech Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One positive for Mannatech is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. It is worth noting though that we have found 3 warning signs for Mannatech that you need to take into consideration.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
