If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Encompass Health (NYSE:EHC) Before It's Too Late

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Encompass Health (NYSE:EHC). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Encompass Health Growing?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Encompass Health managed to grow EPS by 12% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Encompass Health maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 10% to US$5.1b. That's a real positive.

Are Encompass Health Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

The good news for Encompass Health shareholders is that no insiders reported selling shares in the last year. So it's definitely nice that Terrance Williams bought US$20k worth of shares at an average price of around US$56.61.

Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Encompass Health is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$160m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Does Encompass Health Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One positive for Encompass Health is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. On top of that, we've seen insiders buying shares even though they already own plenty. To me, that all makes it well worth a spot on your watchlist, as well as continuing research. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Encompass Health that you need to be mindful of.
