Improved Revenues Required Before GeneDx Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:WGS) Stock's 56% Jump Looks Justified

Those holding GeneDx Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:WGS) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 56% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 75% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, considering around half the companies operating in the United States' Healthcare industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.1x, you may still consider GeneDx Holdings as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does GeneDx Holdings' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, GeneDx Holdings' revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as GeneDx Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 15% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 3.5% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 7.6% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we can see why GeneDx Holdings is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On GeneDx Holdings' P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift GeneDx Holdings' P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that GeneDx Holdings maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
