UFP Technologies Insiders Sell US$50m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Many UFP Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:UFPT) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
UFP Technologies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the CEO & Chairman, R. Bailly, sold US$14m worth of shares at a price of US$325 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$240). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.
In total, UFP Technologies insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insiders At UFP Technologies Have Sold Stock Recently
Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at UFP Technologies. In total, General Counsel Christopher Litterio dumped US$324k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.
Insider Ownership Of UFP Technologies
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. UFP Technologies insiders own about US$68m worth of shares. That equates to 3.7% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About UFP Technologies Insiders?
An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. But since UFP Technologies is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We're in no rush to buy! While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
