Progyny, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PGNY) Stock Retreats 28% But Earnings Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Progyny, Inc. (NASDAQ:PGNY) shares are down a considerable 28% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 51% loss during that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Progyny may still be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 24.2x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 18x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.
Progyny certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Progyny's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 25% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 22% drop in EPS in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 22% per annum over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 10% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Progyny's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Progyny's P/E
There's still some solid strength behind Progyny's P/E, if not its share price lately. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Progyny maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
Having said that, be aware Progyny is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
