Progyny, Inc. (NASDAQ:PGNY) Stocks Pounded By 25% But Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing
Progyny, Inc. (NASDAQ:PGNY) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 25% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 44% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, Progyny's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 31.1x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 17x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Progyny certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Progyny's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 25% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 22% drop in EPS in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 22% each year during the coming three years according to the ten analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 10% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Progyny's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
Progyny's shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Progyny maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
The company's balance sheet is another key area for risk analysis. Take a look at our free balance sheet analysis for Progyny with six simple checks on some of these key factors.
