Insiders who purchased US$10m worth of LumiraDx Limited (NASDAQ:LMDX) shares over the past year recouped some of their losses after price gained 11% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at US$4.5m since the time of purchase.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

LumiraDx Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by insider Willard Umphrey for US$10m worth of shares, at about US$1.75 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$0.98. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. Willard Umphrey was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. LumiraDx insiders own 39% of the company, currently worth about US$121m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
