Returns On Capital At Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) Have Hit The Brakes
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at Intuitive Surgical's (NASDAQ:ISRG) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Intuitive Surgical, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = US$1.8b ÷ (US$14b - US$1.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
Thus, Intuitive Surgical has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Medical Equipment industry average of 8.2% it's much better.

So How Is Intuitive Surgical's ROCE Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has consistently earned 15% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 111% in that time. 15% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Intuitive Surgical has consistently earned this amount. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
Our Take On Intuitive Surgical's ROCE
To sum it up, Intuitive Surgical has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 232% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
