Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) jumps 3.4% this week, though earnings growth is still tracking behind five-year shareholder returns

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) shareholders have seen the share price descend 14% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. It's fair to say most would be happy with 233% the gain in that time. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, Intuitive Surgical managed to grow its earnings per share at 10% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 27% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This optimism is visible in its fairly high P/E ratio of 78.52.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Intuitive Surgical has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 27% in the last twelve months. That's better than the annualised return of 27% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
