Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ:CERS) Stock Rockets 26% But Many Are Still Ignoring The Company
Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ:CERS) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 19% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, Cerus' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Medical Equipment industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.8x and even P/S above 8x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Cerus Performed Recently?
Cerus' revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. Those who are bullish on Cerus will be hoping that this isn't the case.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Cerus would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 13% last year. The latest three year period has also seen a 25% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 19% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.6% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it odd that Cerus is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Cerus' P/S
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Cerus' P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Cerus' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Cerus, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
