J. M. Smucker's (NYSE:SJM) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
The J. M. Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) will increase its dividend on the 1st of September to $1.06, which is 3.9% higher than last year's payment from the same period of $1.02. The payment will take the dividend yield to 2.8%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

J. M. Smucker Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. J. M. Smucker is not generating a profit, but its free cash flows easily cover the dividend, leaving plenty for reinvestment in the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 169.0%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could get very high, which probably can't continue without starting to put some pressure on the balance sheet.
J. M. Smucker Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from $2.08 total annually to $4.08. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 7.0% over that duration. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Over the past five years, it looks as though J. M. Smucker's EPS has declined at around 15% a year. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future. Over the next year, however, earnings are actually predicted to rise, but we would still be cautious until a track record of earnings growth can be built.
Our Thoughts On J. M. Smucker's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company has been bring in plenty of cash to cover the dividend, but we don't necessarily think that makes it a great dividend stock. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
