Is Post Holdings (POST) Undervalued As Earnings Beat And Debt Reduction Takes Priority?

Post Holdings (POST) is back in focus after reporting third quarter fiscal 2026 results and updating investors on 2027 earnings expectations and capital allocation plans, including a clear tilt toward debt reduction instead of buybacks.

See our latest analysis for Post Holdings.

The latest earnings update and the decision to favour debt reduction over buybacks have come alongside a sharp reset in sentiment, with the share price down 12.79% on a 1 day basis and the 1 year total shareholder return down 27.11%. Despite this, the 5 year total shareholder return is slightly positive at 1.02%, which suggests longer term holders have seen far less movement than recent trading might imply.

Post Holdings runs a broad packaged foods portfolio, yet the share price reset and the shift toward debt paydown put the focus on something simpler. Is this now a solid business at a sensible valuation?

Most Popular Narrative: 33% Undervalued

Post Holdings last closed at $78.69, while the most followed narrative places fair value closer to $117.17. That gap sits on a specific set of earnings and margin expectations rather than vague optimism.

The company's continued pursuit of cost optimization (plant closures, SG&A workforce reductions, manufacturing mix improvements, and automation) is expected to enhance net profit margins, improve operating leverage, and bolster the company's ability to offset category volume pressures.

Read the complete narrative.

The fair value story for Post Holdings leans heavily on margin expansion, steadier earnings and a future earnings multiple below many current food peers. Curious which revenue and profit assumptions have to hold up to keep that narrative intact?

Result: Fair Value of $117.17 (UNDERVALUED)

Have a read of the narrative in full and understand what's behind the forecasts.

However, this Post Holdings narrative still hinges on a few pressure points, including ongoing volume declines in core cereal and pet food, as well as the drag from relatively high leverage.

Between 2003 and 2011, gold nearly went 5x. Dollar went weak too. The gold companies did bad. It is worth noting that between 2003 and 2011, there was 2008! I will leave it your inference and research.
