Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST) Will Want To Turn Around Its Return Trends
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Having said that, while the ROCE is currently high for Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST), we aren't jumping out of our chairs because returns are decreasing.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Monster Beverage:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.23 = US$1.6b ÷ (US$8.2b - US$1.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
So, Monster Beverage has an ROCE of 23%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Beverage industry average of 14%.

What Can We Tell From Monster Beverage's ROCE Trend?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Monster Beverage, we didn't gain much confidence. Historically returns on capital were even higher at 31%, but they have dropped over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
What We Can Learn From Monster Beverage's ROCE
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Monster Beverage. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 62% to shareholders over the last five years. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
