Cheniere Energy Insiders Sold US$7.1m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Over the past year, many Cheniere Energy, Inc. (NYSE:LNG) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Cheniere Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Executive VP & Chief Commercial Officer, Anatol Feygin, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$5.1m worth of shares at a price of US$216 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even slightly below the current price of US$220. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 11% of Anatol Feygin's holding.

Does Cheniere Energy Boast High Insider Ownership?
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Cheniere Energy insiders own 0.6% of the company, worth about US$302m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
