FutureFuel Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, FutureFuel was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

If the company can't turn things around, EPS could fall by 2.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 555%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was $0.48, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $0.24. The dividend has shrunk at around 6.7% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.

FutureFuel May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Over the past five years, it looks as though FutureFuel's EPS has declined at around 2.0% a year. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits.

Our Thoughts On FutureFuel's Dividend

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
