California Resources (NYSE:CRC) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, California Resources (NYSE:CRC) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for California Resources:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.093 = US$284m ÷ (US$4.0b - US$932m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
Thus, California Resources has an ROCE of 9.3%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Oil and Gas industry average of 21%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For California Resources Tell Us?
California Resources has not disappointed in regards to ROCE growth. The data shows that returns on capital have increased by 495% over the trailing five years. That's not bad because this tells for every dollar invested (capital employed), the company is increasing the amount earned from that dollar. In regards to capital employed, California Resources appears to been achieving more with less, since the business is using 44% less capital to run its operation. California Resources may be selling some assets so it's worth investigating if the business has plans for future investments to increase returns further still.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. The current liabilities has increased to 23% of total assets, so the business is now more funded by the likes of its suppliers or short-term creditors. It's worth keeping an eye on this because as the percentage of current liabilities to total assets increases, some aspects of risk also increase.
In Conclusion...
In summary, it's great to see that California Resources has been able to turn things around and earn higher returns on lower amounts of capital. And given the stock has remained rather flat over the last year, there might be an opportunity here if other metrics are strong. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
