Atlas Energy Solutions Inc. (NYSE:AESI) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 37% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, Atlas Energy Solutions' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 32.6x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 19x and even P/E's below 11x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

Atlas Energy Solutions hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Atlas Energy Solutions' Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Atlas Energy Solutions' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 67%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 60,997% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 150% as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 15% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Atlas Energy Solutions' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Atlas Energy Solutions' P/E

The strong share price surge has got Atlas Energy Solutions' P/E rushing to great heights as well. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Atlas Energy Solutions maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
