Insiders Re-Evaluate Their US$730.4k Stock Purchase As Prairie Operating Falls To US$147m
Insiders who acquired US$730.4k worth of Prairie Operating Co.'s (NASDAQ:PROP) stock at an average price of US$3.77 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 16% price decline. This is not good as insiders invest based on expectations that their money will appreciate over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their original investment is now worth only US$648.6k.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Prairie Operating
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Jonathan Gray for US$493k worth of shares, at about US$3.75 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$3.35). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.
While Prairie Operating insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. Insider Ownership
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Prairie Operating insiders own 35% of the company, worth about US$51m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Prairie Operating Insiders?
It is good to see recent purchasing. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Prairie Operating we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 1 warning sign with Prairie Operating and understanding it should be part of your investment process.
