It's Down 28% But Berry Corporation (NASDAQ:BRY) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks
Berry Corporation (NASDAQ:BRY) shares have had a horrible month, losing 28% after a relatively good period beforehand. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 55% loss during that time.
Since its price has dipped substantially, Berry may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.9x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 18x and even P/E's higher than 31x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Berry's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Berry?
Berry's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 49%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 95% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 14% growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Berry's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Berry's P/E?
Berry's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Berry currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Berry (at least 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
