Market Participants Recognise Toast, Inc.'s (NYSE:TOST) Revenues Pushing Shares 29% Higher

Toast, Inc. (NYSE:TOST) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 29% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 62% in the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, given around half the companies in the United States' Diversified Financial industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.6x, you may consider Toast as a stock to avoid entirely with its 4.9x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Toast Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Toast has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Toast's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 27%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 167% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 19% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 6.8% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Toast's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What Does Toast's P/S Mean For Investors?

Toast's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our look into Toast shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
