Would Shareholders Who Purchased GAMCO Investors' (NYSE:GBL) Stock Three Years Be Happy With The Share price Today?
It is a pleasure to report that the GAMCO Investors, Inc. (NYSE:GBL) is up 50% in the last quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. In fact, the share price is down 40% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the three years that the share price fell, GAMCO Investors' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 11% each year. The share price decline of 16% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy. The less favorable sentiment is reflected in its current P/E ratio of 7.47.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for GAMCO Investors the TSR over the last 3 years was -36%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
GAMCO Investors provided a TSR of 2.2% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 6% per year, over five years. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand GAMCO Investors better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for GAMCO Investors (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
