The board of BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE:BLK) has announced that the dividend on 24th of March will be increased to $5.21, which will be 2.2% higher than last year's payment of $5.10 which covered the same period. BlackRock's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. BlackRock was earning enough to cover the previous dividend, but it was paying out quite a large proportion of its free cash flows. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 78% indicates it is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 35.7%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 41% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
BlackRock Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $7.72 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of $20.40. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 10% per annum over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.
BlackRock Could Grow Its Dividend
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. We are encouraged to see that BlackRock has grown earnings per share at 7.5% per year over the past five years. The company is paying a reasonable amount of earnings to shareholders, and is growing earnings at a decent rate so we think it could be a decent dividend stock.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company hasn't been paying a very consistent dividend over time, despite only paying out a small portion of earnings. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
