Sezzle Inc. (NASDAQ:SEZL) Soars 27% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
Sezzle Inc. (NASDAQ:SEZL) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Sezzle's P/S ratio of 2.9x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Diversified Financial industry in the United States is also close to 2.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Sezzle Has Been Performing
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Sezzle has been doing relatively well. Perhaps the market is expecting this level of performance to taper off, keeping the P/S from soaring. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.
Keen to find out how analysts think Sezzle's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Sezzle?
Sezzle's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 29% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 124% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 22% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 3.4%, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Sezzle's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What We Can Learn From Sezzle's P/S?
Sezzle appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, Sezzle's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Sezzle (1 is significant!) that you need to be mindful of.
