Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Life Time Group Holdings (NYSE:LTH)
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Life Time Group Holdings (NYSE:LTH) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Life Time Group Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.04 = US$265m ÷ (US$7.1b - US$450m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, Life Time Group Holdings has an ROCE of 4.0%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Hospitality industry average of 10%.

In the above chart we have measured Life Time Group Holdings' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like, you can check out the forecasts from the analysts covering Life Time Group Holdings for free.
The Trend Of ROCE
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last four years, the ROCE has climbed 343% in that same time. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
The Key Takeaway
As discussed above, Life Time Group Holdings appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. Since the total return from the stock has been almost flat over the last year, there might be an opportunity here if the valuation looks good. That being the case, research into the company's current valuation metrics and future prospects seems fitting.
Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Life Time Group Holdings (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should know about.
