Revenues Working Against Chegg, Inc.'s (NYSE:CHGG) Share Price Following 50% Dive
Chegg, Inc. (NYSE:CHGG) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 50% share price drop in the last month. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 90% loss during that time.
After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies operating in the United States' Consumer Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.6x, you may consider Chegg as an attractive investment with its 0.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Chegg's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Chegg could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Chegg would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 14%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 20% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 17% each year over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 13% growth each year, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Chegg's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Key Takeaway
Chegg's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Consumer Services companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Chegg's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
