Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Yatra Online, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:YTRA) 28% Share Price Surge
Yatra Online, Inc. (NASDAQ:YTRA) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 35% in the last twelve months.
Since its price has surged higher, when almost half of the companies in the United States' Hospitality industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.2x, you may consider Yatra Online as a stock probably not worth researching with its 1.8x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Yatra Online's Recent Performance Look Like?
Yatra Online could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to undergo a reversal of fortunes, which has elevated the P/S ratio. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Yatra Online's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.5% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 230% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 30% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 12%, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Yatra Online's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Yatra Online's P/S
Yatra Online shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our look into Yatra Online shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
