Should You Be Adding Marriott International (NASDAQ:MAR) To Your Watchlist Today?
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Marriott International (NASDAQ:MAR). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Marriott International with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Marriott International's Improving Profits
In the last three years Marriott International's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Impressively, Marriott International's EPS catapulted from US$5.32 to US$9.34, over the last year. Year on year growth of 76% is certainly a sight to behold. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Marriott International shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 59% to 68%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for Marriott International.
Are Marriott International Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Owing to the size of Marriott International, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$9.4b. That equates to 16% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Looking very optimistic for investors.
Does Marriott International Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Marriott International's earnings have taken off in quite an impressive fashion. That EPS growth certainly is attention grabbing, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke our interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So at the surface level, Marriott International is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. Still, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Marriott International.
