Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By YETI Holdings, Inc.'s (NYSE:YETI) 25% Share Price Surge
The YETI Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:YETI) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 3.0% isn't as impressive.
Following the firm bounce in price, YETI Holdings may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 18x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
YETI Holdings hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For YETI Holdings?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as YETI Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 17% decrease to the company's bottom line. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 6.0% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 14% each year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why YETI Holdings is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From YETI Holdings' P/E?
YETI Holdings shares have received a push in the right direction, but its P/E is elevated too. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that YETI Holdings maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
