Slowing Rates Of Return At SharkNinja (NYSE:SN) Leave Little Room For Excitement
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think SharkNinja (NYSE:SN) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for SharkNinja:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.18 = US$454m ÷ (US$3.9b - US$1.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
So, SharkNinja has an ROCE of 18%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Consumer Durables industry average of 14% it's much better.

In the above chart we have measured SharkNinja's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free analyst report for SharkNinja .
The Trend Of ROCE
There hasn't been much to report for SharkNinja's returns and its level of capital employed because both metrics have been steady for the past two years. Businesses with these traits tend to be mature and steady operations because they're past the growth phase. So unless we see a substantial change at SharkNinja in terms of ROCE and additional investments being made, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger.
The Bottom Line On SharkNinja's ROCE
In summary, SharkNinja isn't compounding its earnings but is generating stable returns on the same amount of capital employed. Investors must think there's better things to come because the stock has knocked it out of the park, delivering a 195% gain to shareholders who have held over the last year. But if the trajectory of these underlying trends continue, we think the likelihood of it being a multi-bagger from here isn't high.
