Polaris Inc. Earnings Missed Analyst Estimates: Here's What Analysts Are Forecasting Now

As you might know, Polaris Inc. (NYSE:PII) last week released its latest quarterly, and things did not turn out so great for shareholders. It wasn't a great result overall - while revenue fell marginally short of analyst estimates at US$1.7b, statutory earnings missed forecasts by an incredible 44%, coming in at just US$0.49 per share. Following the result, the analysts have updated their earnings model, and it would be good to know whether they think there's been a strong change in the company's prospects, or if it's business as usual. So we gathered the latest post-earnings forecasts to see what estimates suggest is in store for next year.

NYSE:PII Earnings and Revenue Growth October 25th 2024

Following the recent earnings report, the consensus from 18 analysts covering Polaris is for revenues of US$7.28b in 2025. This implies a small 6.7% decline in revenue compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are predicted to increase 6.6% to US$3.89. In the lead-up to this report, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$7.77b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$5.81 in 2025. From this we can that sentiment has definitely become more bearish after the latest results, leading to lower revenue forecasts and a pretty serious reduction to earnings per share estimates.

The consensus price target fell 5.8% to US$83.00, with the weaker earnings outlook clearly leading valuation estimates. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. There are some variant perceptions on Polaris, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$120 and the most bearish at US$62.00 per share. This is a fairly broad spread of estimates, suggesting that analysts are forecasting a wide range of possible outcomes for the business.

One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. We would highlight that revenue is expected to reverse, with a forecast 5.4% annualised decline to the end of 2025. That is a notable change from historical growth of 6.3% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 3.4% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Polaris is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The biggest concern is that the analysts reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds could lay ahead for Polaris. Unfortunately, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and our data indicates underperformance compared to the wider industry. Even so, earnings per share are more important to the intrinsic value of the business. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of Polaris' future valuation.

Following on from that line of thought, we think that the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. We have forecasts for Polaris going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
