If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. That's why when we briefly looked at NVR's (NYSE:NVR) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for NVR:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.36 = US$2.1b ÷ (US$6.5b - US$810m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Therefore, NVR has an ROCE of 36%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Consumer Durables industry average of 14%.

What Can We Tell From NVR's ROCE Trend?
It's hard not to be impressed by NVR's returns on capital. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 36% and the business has deployed 78% more capital into its operations. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. You'll see this when looking at well operated businesses or favorable business models.
Our Take On NVR's ROCE
In short, we'd argue NVR has the makings of a multi-bagger since its been able to compound its capital at very profitable rates of return. On top of that, the stock has rewarded shareholders with a remarkable 110% return to those who've held over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
