La-Z-Boy (NYSE:LZB) Hasn't Managed To Accelerate Its Returns
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. That's why when we briefly looked at La-Z-Boy's (NYSE:LZB) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for La-Z-Boy, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.18 = US$233m ÷ (US$1.9b - US$551m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to October 2022).
Thus, La-Z-Boy has an ROCE of 18%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 17% generated by the Consumer Durables industry.

So How Is La-Z-Boy's ROCE Trending?
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has consistently earned 18% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 88% in that time. Since 18% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
The Key Takeaway
In the end, La-Z-Boy has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. However, over the last five years, the stock has only delivered a 4.1% return to shareholders who held over that period. So because of the trends we're seeing, we'd recommend looking further into this stock to see if it has the makings of a multi-bagger.
Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for La-Z-Boy (of which 2 can't be ignored!) that you should know about.
