If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. That's why when we briefly looked at Levi Strauss' (NYSE:LEVI) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Levi Strauss is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.20 = US$798m ÷ (US$5.9b - US$1.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to August 2022).

So, Levi Strauss has an ROCE of 20%. On its own, that's a very good return and it's on par with the returns earned by companies in a similar industry.

So How Is Levi Strauss' ROCE Trending?

It's hard not to be impressed by Levi Strauss' returns on capital. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 20% and the business has deployed 71% more capital into its operations. With returns that high, it's great that the business can continually reinvest its money at such appealing rates of return. If these trends can continue, it wouldn't surprise us if the company became a multi-bagger.

In Conclusion...

Levi Strauss has demonstrated its proficiency by generating high returns on increasing amounts of capital employed, which we're thrilled about. However, despite the favorable fundamentals, the stock has fallen 15% over the last three years, so there might be an opportunity here for astute investors. For that reason, savvy investors might want to look further into this company in case it's a prime investment.
