Positive earnings growth hasn't been enough to get Lovesac (NASDAQ:LOVE) shareholders a favorable return over the last year
The Lovesac Company (NASDAQ:LOVE) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 16% in the last week. But that's small comfort given the dismal price performance over the last year. Like a receding glacier in a warming world, the share price has melted 64% in that period. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. It may be that the fall was an overreaction.
The recent uptick of 16% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Even though the Lovesac share price is down over the year, its EPS actually improved. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped.
It's fair to say that the share price does not seem to be reflecting the EPS growth. So it's well worth checking out some other metrics, too.
Revenue was fairly steady year on year, which isn't usually such a bad thing. However, it is certainly possible the market was expecting an uptick in revenue, and that the share price fall reflects that disappointment.
You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective
Lovesac shareholders are down 64% for the year, but the market itself is up 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 9% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
