Johnson Outdoors (NASDAQ:JOUT) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At US$0.30
The board of Johnson Outdoors Inc. (NASDAQ:JOUT) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 29th of October to US$0.30. This takes the annual payment to 0.9% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Johnson Outdoors' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. However, Johnson Outdoors' earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 6.9% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 13%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.
Johnson Outdoors Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 8 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2013, the first annual payment was US$0.30, compared to the most recent full-year payment of US$1.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 19% a year over that time. Johnson Outdoors has been growing its dividend quite rapidly, which is exciting. However, the short payment history makes us question whether this performance will persist across a full market cycle.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. We are encouraged to see that Johnson Outdoors has grown earnings per share at 40% per year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
Johnson Outdoors Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Johnson Outdoors is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The earnings easily cover the company's distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. If earnings do fall over the next 12 months, the dividend could be buffeted a little bit, but we don't think it should cause too much of a problem in the long term. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Are management backing themselves to deliver performance?
