Republic Services (NYSE:RSG) Has More To Do To Multiply In Value Going Forward
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So, when we ran our eye over Republic Services' (NYSE:RSG) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Republic Services is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = US$3.0b ÷ (US$32b - US$4.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Thus, Republic Services has an ROCE of 11%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 10% generated by the Commercial Services industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Republic Services Tell Us?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 11% and the business has deployed 49% more capital into its operations. Since 11% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
In Conclusion...
In the end, Republic Services has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 148% return they've received over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
