Enviri Corporation's (NYSE:NVRI) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Commercial Services industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.6x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Enviri Has Been Performing

Enviri could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Enviri?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Enviri would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 5.6% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 33% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 7.8% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 19% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why Enviri is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Enviri's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As expected, our analysis of Enviri's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
