Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Franklin Covey Co.'s (NYSE:FC) 27% Share Price Surge
Franklin Covey Co. (NYSE:FC) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 40%.
Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 15x, you may consider Franklin Covey as a stock to avoid entirely with its 48.7x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Franklin Covey has been relatively sluggish. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance will improve markedly. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Franklin Covey's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 13%. However, due to its less than impressive performance prior to this period, EPS growth is practically non-existent over the last three years overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 20% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.9% growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why Franklin Covey is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Franklin Covey's P/E
The strong share price surge has got Franklin Covey's P/E rushing to great heights as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Franklin Covey maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
