BrightView Holdings (NYSE:BV) pulls back 4.4% this week, but still delivers shareholders notable 6.6% CAGR over 5 years
The main point of investing for the long term is to make money. Furthermore, you'd generally like to see the share price rise faster than the market. But BrightView Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:BV) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 37% over five years, which is below the market return. Zooming in, the stock is up a respectable 17% in the last year.
While the stock has fallen 4.4% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, BrightView Holdings managed to grow its earnings per share at 16% a year. We do note that extraordinary items have impacted its earnings history. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 7% over the same period. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective
It's good to see that BrightView Holdings has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 17% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 7%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
