Brink's' (NYSE:BCO) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of The Brink's Company (NYSE:BCO) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 1st of June to US$0.20. This takes the annual payment to 0.8% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Brink's' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Before making this announcement, Brink's' dividend was higher than its profits, but the free cash flows quite comfortably covered it. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise exponentially over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 16%, which would make us comfortable with the dividend's sustainability, despite the levels currently being elevated.
Brink's Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2011, the first annual payment was US$0.40, compared to the most recent full-year payment of US$0.80. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 7.2% over that duration. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Over the past five years, it looks as though Brink's' EPS has declined at around 4.5% a year. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We don't think Brink's is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
