Interface (NASDAQ:TILE) Seems To Use Debt Quite Sensibly
The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Interface, Inc. (NASDAQ:TILE) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.
How Much Debt Does Interface Carry?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Interface had US$302.9m of debt in March 2025, down from US$391.8m, one year before. However, it does have US$97.8m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$205.1m.
How Strong Is Interface's Balance Sheet?
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Interface had liabilities of US$210.2m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$468.6m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$97.8m in cash and US$162.8m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$418.2m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
While this might seem like a lot, it is not so bad since Interface has a market capitalization of US$1.15b, and so it could probably strengthen its balance sheet by raising capital if it needed to. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
While Interface's low debt to EBITDA ratio of 1.2 suggests only modest use of debt, the fact that EBIT only covered the interest expense by 6.0 times last year does give us pause. But the interest payments are certainly sufficient to have us thinking about how affordable its debt is. We saw Interface grow its EBIT by 9.7% in the last twelve months. Whilst that hardly knocks our socks off it is a positive when it comes to debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Interface's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So the logical step is to look at the proportion of that EBIT that is matched by actual free cash flow. During the last three years, Interface generated free cash flow amounting to a very robust 81% of its EBIT, more than we'd expect. That puts it in a very strong position to pay down debt.
Our View
Interface's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. And its net debt to EBITDA is good too. Looking at all the aforementioned factors together, it strikes us that Interface can handle its debt fairly comfortably. On the plus side, this leverage can boost shareholder returns, but the potential downside is more risk of loss, so it's worth monitoring the balance sheet.
