Cintas (NASDAQ:CTAS) May Have Issues Allocating Its Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after investigating Cintas (NASDAQ:CTAS), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Cintas:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.18 = US$1.2b ÷ (US$8.3b - US$1.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to February 2021).
So, Cintas has an ROCE of 18%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 8.7% generated by the Commercial Services industry.

So How Is Cintas' ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Cintas, we didn't gain much confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 18% from 22% five years ago. On the other hand, the company has been employing more capital without a corresponding improvement in sales in the last year, which could suggest these investments are longer term plays. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.
The Bottom Line On Cintas' ROCE
To conclude, we've found that Cintas is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 314% return in the last five years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
