Capital Investments At Cintas (NASDAQ:CTAS) Point To A Promising Future
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. That's why when we briefly looked at Cintas' (NASDAQ:CTAS) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Cintas is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.22 = US$1.4b ÷ (US$8.2b - US$1.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to May 2021).
Therefore, Cintas has an ROCE of 22%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Commercial Services industry average of 7.5%.

How Are Returns Trending?
It's hard not to be impressed by Cintas' returns on capital. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 22% and the business has deployed 92% more capital into its operations. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. You'll see this when looking at well operated businesses or favorable business models.
Our Take On Cintas' ROCE
Cintas has demonstrated its proficiency by generating high returns on increasing amounts of capital employed, which we're thrilled about. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 290% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
