Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of Cimpress (NASDAQ:CMPR) we really liked what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Cimpress is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.21 = US$241m ÷ (US$1.8b - US$636m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

So, Cimpress has an ROCE of 21%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Commercial Services industry average of 10%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Cimpress Tell Us?

Cimpress is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 98% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.

Our Take On Cimpress' ROCE

As discussed above, Cimpress appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. Since the total return from the stock has been almost flat over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here if the valuation looks good. That being the case, research into the company's current valuation metrics and future prospects seems fitting.

Like most companies, Cimpress does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
