INNOVATE Corp. (NYSE:VATE) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 81%
INNOVATE Corp. (NYSE:VATE) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 81% after a shaky period beforehand. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 7.6% over the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, it would still be understandable if you think INNOVATE is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.1x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Construction industry have P/S ratios above 1.1x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How INNOVATE Has Been Performing
For example, consider that INNOVATE's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, INNOVATE would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 16%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 25% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 10% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that INNOVATE's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.
What We Can Learn From INNOVATE's P/S?
INNOVATE's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Our examination of INNOVATE confirms that the company's revenue trends over the past three-year years are a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, as we suspected, given they fall short of current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
Having said that, be aware INNOVATE is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 3 of those are a bit concerning.
